On January 22, U.S. insurer Lemonade launched the world’s first insurance product tailored for autonomous vehicles, initially offering Tesla owners who activate the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature a mileage-based premium discount of up to 50%. The product adopts a “base fee plus pay-per-mile” pricing model, dynamically adjusting premiums based on the usage status of autonomous driving features. It also allows a single policy to cover both autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles, reducing users’ overall costs. This precise pricing relies on deep collaboration with Tesla to access real-time vehicle sensor data. This move marks a significant shift in the insurance industry’s stance toward autonomous driving—from cautious observation to proactive engagement. However, challenges remain for global adoption, including unclear liability assignment in L3-level autonomous driving accidents and the lack of standardized data protocols. While Lemonade’s initiative offers valuable insights for the industry, widespread adoption of autonomous vehicle insurance will require coordinated efforts among automakers, insurers, and regulators.
