At the 2024 CES exhibition, Hyundai Motor Group unveiled Boston Dynamics’ Atlas humanoid robot. Standing 1.5 meters tall with an extended reach of up to 2.3 meters and weighing 90 kilograms, the robot features 56 degrees of freedom, enabling it to walk, wave, perform backflips, and dexterously grasp and transport automotive components. Designed for all-weather outdoor operations, Atlas can autonomously swap its battery when depleted. Hyundai plans to deploy Atlas in smart factories starting in 2028, aiming to mass-produce 30,000 units by 2030. According to Boston Dynamics, the robot is specifically engineered to replace high-risk, repetitive shift-based tasks, with easily detachable components for simplified maintenance. While large-scale industrial deployment is expected between 2028 and 2030, widespread adoption in ordinary households is still approximately five years away.
