The UK is facing an employment crisis triggered by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, with unemployment rising to its highest level in nearly five years. According to research by Morgan Stanley, UK businesses have seen an average productivity gain of 11.5% after adopting AI, but the net job loss rate stands at 8%—double the global average. Industries with high AI adoption rates, including fast-moving consumer goods, retail, real estate, transportation, and automotive sectors, have experienced particularly pronounced layoffs. Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, job vacancies in roles highly susceptible to AI automation—such as software development and consulting—have plummeted by 37%. Across all sectors, job openings have declined by more than one-third, equivalent to approximately 500,000 positions lost, with professional services, technology R&D, and administrative office roles among the hardest hit. Although the Bank of England forecasts that AI could boost productivity by 0.8 percentage points over the next decade, its current adverse impact on youth and white-collar employment has already drawn widespread concern.
