Volkswagen is planning to rebrand its best-selling electric SUV, the ID.4, with a new name—ID. Tiguan. According to German media reports, the renaming was revealed by the IG Metall labor union during a recent press conference and will coincide with the launch of the ID.4’s comprehensive mid-cycle refresh. Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer previously stated that the company aims to carry over well-known traditional model names into the electric era to strengthen brand recognition. The ID.4 has been in production since 2020, and the updated version is expected to debut this year, with production continuing through 2031. Following the rename, the vehicle is expected to retain its current design language. This move aligns with an industry trend: automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Toyota have recently revised their EV naming strategies to streamline product lines and reduce consumer confusion.
