Recently, a TikTok user @patricenotpatricia posted a video warning about the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning when warming up a car in winter—even when parked in an open-air lot, it’s not entirely safe. She cited a tragic incident where a mother and daughter took a nap inside their vehicle in an open parking area, resulting in the daughter’s death from carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless gas known as the "silent killer," causes more than 400 unintentional deaths annually in the U.S., according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Experts note that snow blocking the exhaust pipe is a common cause, potentially allowing toxic fumes to flow back into the cabin. They recommend clearing snow from the tailpipe before starting the engine, opening windows for ventilation every 10 to 15 minutes while warming the car, or using a portable carbon monoxide detector. Traffic authorities also caution against prolonged idling for heating and stress the importance of ensuring the exhaust system is in good condition.
