A Mercedes-Benz salesperson, Jay Pichardo, accidentally discovered an RFID tag embedded in the sidewall of a Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tire while inspecting it and posted a video on TikTok asking, “Why do tires need RFID?” The video has garnered over 17,000 views. RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology can store information such as the tire’s production date, specifications, and unique serial number, enabling tracking throughout its entire lifecycle. Starting from late 2024, Michelin has partnered with Beontag to embed RFID chips into tens of millions of commercial and passenger vehicle tires over the next two years. Commenters noted that this technology facilitates precise tire pressure monitoring, anti-counterfeiting verification, rapid recalls, and streamlined insurance claims. Additionally, beginning in 2027, the European Union will mandate digital product passports (DPP) for all tires to support a circular economy. RFID is now gradually becoming an industry standard.
