On February 4, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) released data showing that Germany produced a total of 1.67 million electric passenger vehicles in 2025, an increase of 23% year-on-year, solidifying its position as the world’s second-largest electric vehicle (EV) producer—trailing only China (16.1 million units) and ahead of the United States (1.04 million units). Of this total, battery electric vehicle (BEV) production reached 1.22 million units, up 15% year-on-year, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) output stood at approximately 450,000 units, surging by 54% compared to the previous year. VDA President Hildegard Müller stated that Germany is firmly advancing electrification and climate-neutral mobility, forecasting another 10% increase in BEV production in 2026. She also urged the government to accelerate the expansion of charging infrastructure and power grids, as well as implement electricity pricing reforms, to support the long-term effectiveness of policies including new vehicle subsidies.
