Between 2014 and 2024, the number of registered American full-size pickup trucks in the UK surged from 308,000 to 591,000—a 92% increase. The environmental group Clean Cities noted that this growth stems primarily from lifestyle preferences rather than genuine practical needs, and has led to parking chaos and road safety risks. Research shows that in collisions, large pickups pose a 200% higher risk of causing fatalities among pedestrians and occupants of other vehicles compared to standard cars. Additionally, their tall front ends severely obstruct driver visibility on the UK’s narrow streets. The organization is urging local authorities to raise urban parking fees, tighten safety standards, and restrict their access. Meanwhile, under EU-U.S. trade agreements, American-made pickups can be exported directly to the UK without undergoing certain local safety tests. As of February 2026, the UK has yet to implement specific regulatory policies targeting pickup trucks.
