BMW's M division is preparing to develop the brand's first rugged off-road SUV, codenamed G74. Production is expected to begin in the U.S. in 2029, potentially replacing the XM plug-in hybrid, which will cease production at the end of 2028. The new model will directly compete with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Defender. Although no actual prototype has been revealed yet, renderings suggest it will feature a boxy, muscular design, retaining BMW’s signature kidney grille and split headlights, along with high ground clearance, underbody protection plates, roof rails, and off-road wheels. The rear end will showcase a vertical tailgate, upright taillights, and quad exhaust tips. The G74 will be built on an evolved version of the next-generation X5 platform and will be offered with three powertrain options: conventional gasoline, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. As brands like Audi and Genesis also enter this segment, competition in the luxury rugged SUV market is intensifying.
