A Washington state auto mechanic has gone viral on TikTok after explaining why car repair costs are so high these days. In his video, he described a case involving a Mazda CX-5 brought in for a damaged differential bushing. He pointed out that Mazda doesn’t sell the bushing as a standalone part—instead, customers must replace the entire subframe. What should have been a simple, inexpensive fix costing just a few dozen dollars turned into a repair potentially running into thousands of dollars once labor, materials, and a subsequent four-wheel alignment were factored in. Frustrated, the technician remarked, “Our hands are tied—we can’t get the individual part.” While some commenters suggested using aftermarket parts, the mechanic emphasized that manufacturer policies restrict such options. The video has already garnered over 1.1 million views, sparking widespread discussion about automakers’ parts strategies and rising repair costs.
