BMW will officially unveil its all-new all-electric i3 sedan on March 19. As the second model based on the Neue Klasse (New Class) platform, it follows the iX3. Unlike previous practice, the i3 will feature a unique exterior design distinct from the combustion-engine 3 Series, while higher-end models like the i5 and i7 will largely retain the styling of their respective 5 Series and 7 Series counterparts. The new i3 is built on BMW’s latest dedicated EV architecture, sharing its underpinnings with the iX3. Meanwhile, the next-generation combustion-powered 3 Series will continue to use an upgraded version of the CLAR platform, offering 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engines paired with a mild-hybrid system. Diesel and plug-in hybrid variants will also be available in select markets. Inside, the i3 and the new 3 Series will share nearly identical interiors, both equipped with BMW’s latest infotainment system and the Panoramic iDrive head-up display. In terms of performance, the M350 will feature an enhanced version of the inline-six engine, while the upcoming M3—expected later—is anticipated to come only with a mild-hybrid system and could surpass the current M3 Competition xDrive’s output of 523 horsepower.
