A 2020 Kia Telluride suddenly displayed all warning lights on its dashboard, appearing to suffer a severe malfunction—yet the real culprit turned out to be the rearview camera. New York technician Adrien Smith discovered that a CAN bus communication failure triggered multiple false warnings, including lane departure, stability control, and brake system alerts. Upon inspection, he found that water had entered the rearview camera housed in the tailgate, causing an internal short circuit that disrupted the vehicle’s entire communication network. Disconnecting the camera immediately restored normal system operation. Several other technicians commented that they’d encountered similar issues—such as with the Santa Fe, where a shorted rearview camera caused identical symptoms. Although a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) might offer guidance, Kia and Hyundai do not fully share repair documentation, leaving diagnosis heavily reliant on technician experience. This case highlights the complexity of modern automotive electronics: a minor component failure can bring an entire vehicle to a standstill.
