At the High-Level Forum on Intelligent and Electric Vehicle Development held on March 13, Academician Ouyang Minggao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences stated that current electric vehicle (EV) technology is already quite mature, while solid-state batteries—though receiving significant attention—will still require three to five years before achieving industrial-scale production. He outlined a three-phase roadmap for solid-state battery development: from 2025 to 2027, the focus will be on sulfide-based electrolytes with an energy density target of 200–300 Wh/kg; from 2027 to 2030, research will concentrate on silicon-carbon anodes aiming for 400 Wh/kg; and from 2030 to 2035, the goal will be to reach 500 Wh/kg and develop lithium-free anode technologies. Ouyang emphasized that although test vehicles equipped with solid-state batteries are expected to debut by the end of this year, mass production remains distant. He cautioned consumers that most products currently marketed as "solid-state batteries" are largely promotional concepts, with no genuine commercial sales yet, and advised against purchasing such vehicles over the next two years.
