A 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan owner posted a plea on TikTok, saying both Pep Boys and an independent repair shop quoted her $150 to replace "special oil," leaving her suspicious she was being overcharged. She explained she only needed a routine oil change, yet both shops gave her the same high quote, which confused her. In fact, most European vehicles—including Volkswagens—require full-synthetic motor oil that meets specific certification standards. Common brands like Pennzoil or Valvoline often don’t comply. Using the wrong oil can lead to poor lubrication, engine overheating, or even damage—and may void the vehicle’s warranty. Industry insiders note that this specialized oil costs more, and given the Tiguan’s relatively large oil capacity, a $150 service fee falls within a reasonable range. Some owners suggest buying certified oil yourself (such as from FCP EURO) to save money.
