BMW plans for electric vehicles (EVs) to account for 50% of its global sales by 2030, covering its three main brands: BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce. Despite maintaining a multi-powertrain strategy, the company has already invested over €10 billion in developing its "Neue Klasse" platform, which will underpin next-generation electric motors, batteries, and a new factory in Debrecen, Hungary. In 2025, EVs represented 17.9% of BMW’s global sales, a significant increase from just 4.1% in 2021. The new iX3 has already garnered more than 50,000 orders, and BMW plans to launch several additional EV models, including the i3 sedan, iX5, and iX7 SUVs—some of which may be produced at its Spartanburg plant in the U.S., where at least six EV SUV models could eventually be built. Additionally, more affordable models like the i1 hatchback and i2 sedan are expected to debut before 2030. However, achieving the global 50% EV target remains a major challenge, especially considering that EVs accounted for only 7.8% of BMW’s U.S. sales last year, compared to 19.5% in Europe.
