Nissan to Reverse-Import U.S.-Built Left-Hand Drive Murano to Japan, Launching in 2027

Nissan has announced it will reverse-export the midsize crossover Murano, produced in Tennessee, USA, to Japan, with sales expected to begin in early 2027. This marks the first time since the 1990s that a U.S.-built Nissan model will be sold in Japan. The move follows Toyota and Honda in leveraging Japan’s recently relaxed vehicle certification rules, which now allow vehicles that have passed U.S. safety inspections to be imported directly without additional testing—and retain their left-hand-drive configuration. Although left-hand drive contradicts Japan’s right-hand driving norms, automakers hope that introducing large crossovers, pickups, and other U.S.-spec models—uncommon in the Japanese domestic market—will diversify their product lineups and boost sales. Toyota plans to introduce the Camry, Highlander, and Tundra this year, while Honda will export the Integra Type S and Passport TrailSport Elite starting in the second half of 2026. Analysts remain skeptical about the prospects for left-hand-drive vehicles in Japan, suggesting they may remain niche products.
