The city of Bristol, UK, has launched a pilot program installing electric vehicle (EV) chargers on 149 lampposts to address charging difficulties faced by residents without private parking spaces. However, the charging rate of 55 pence per kilowatt-hour (approximately RMB 5.10)—ten times higher than home charging costs (around 5 pence)—has sparked public discontent. Councillor Tim Kent warned that such high fees could deter residents from switching to electric vehicles. Although the city has plans to accelerate EV adoption and has secured £2.16 million in funding to expand its residential charging network, it currently has only 200 public chargers—far short of the estimated 800 needed by next year. Authorities have pledged to review the pricing structure during the pilot phase to ensure it remains competitive. Martin Fodor, Chair of the Environment Committee, emphasized that promoting EV adoption must not come at the expense of increasing residents’ financial burdens, stressing that supporting infrastructure must be both affordable and accessible.
