BMW has recently launched a driving data collection program in Germany aimed at optimizing its driver assistance systems using real-world driving scenarios. The program initially applies to the new iX3 model and will later expand to other new models such as the i3. With explicit user consent, vehicles will automatically record external camera footage along with sensor data—including vehicle speed and steering angle—only when specific high-risk events occur, such as emergency braking, evasive maneuvers, or system intervention. BMW emphasized that all images will undergo face blurring and license plate anonymization, and vehicle identification information will be deleted before data is uploaded, ensuring user privacy. The collected data will be used to enhance features like automatic emergency braking, lane-change assistance, and urban and highway driver assistance systems, as well as improve detection and protection capabilities for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. Optimized functions will be delivered to users’ vehicles via over-the-air (OTA) updates. The program is set to gradually roll out across the entire European Economic Area in the future.
