A TikTok video recently went viral on social media, showing a Waymo autonomous vehicle apparently being rear-ended by an 18-wheeler while changing lanes on a Houston highway. The video’s poster, Lucia Molina, commented: “Waymo is simply not ready for Houston drivers.” The incident caused severe traffic congestion—Molina said it took her 30 minutes to travel just two miles. Waymo responded by stating that a safety driver was present in the vehicle at the time of the incident. According to the company, after the Waymo vehicle changed lanes, it was struck from behind by a semi-truck, which briefly became lodged underneath the car. Both vehicles then safely pulled over, and no injuries were reported. Waymo only launched its driverless service in Houston this past February, currently focusing primarily on downtown areas, with highway testing still in its early stages. Many local netizens questioned whether autonomous vehicles can adequately handle Houston’s aggressive driving environment. Some joked about “imminent Waymo road rage incidents,” while others expressed concerns that the technology isn’t yet ready for the complexities of high-speed highway conditions.
