Tesla has raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $25 billion, significantly higher than the $9 billion projected for 2025. The company had previously estimated in January that 2026 capex would exceed $20 billion. This revision comes amid Tesla reporting positive free cash flow of $1.44 billion in the first quarter of 2024—far surpassing market expectations of a net cash burn of $1.43 billion. During the earnings call, CEO Elon Musk stated that Tesla is entering a multi-year phase of substantial capital investment, aligning with the company’s expectation of significant future revenue growth. He noted that other major tech companies are undertaking similarly scaled capital expansions. CFO Vaibhav Taneja projected that Tesla’s free cash flow will turn negative for the remainder of 2026. Tesla’s strategic focus has now shifted toward AI-driven autonomous robotaxis and humanoid robotics, with a substantial portion of its current $1.45 trillion market valuation predicated on this vision. Despite challenges in its automotive segment—including intensifying competition, pricing pressures on new models, and the expiration of U.S. EV tax credits—vehicle demand has shown varying degrees of recovery across Asia-Pacific, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and North America. In Q1 2024, Tesla reported revenue of $22.39 billion, slightly below the analyst consensus estimate of $22.6 billion. Deliveries, while falling short of Wall Street expectations, rose 6.3% year-over-year. Capital expenditures during the quarter were approximately 40% lower than the analyst average. Additionally, Tesla is developing a smaller, more affordable all-electric SUV, initially slated for production in China, though the project remains in its early stages. Meanwhile, Tesla’s energy generation and storage business delivered strong results, driven by robust demand for grid-scale battery storage. Investors are closely watching whether the company’s autonomous driving and robotics initiatives can successfully transition from concept to commercial reality.
