Soaring Memory Prices Hit Auto Industry, Raising Costs but Deliveries Hold Steady

Driven by surging demand for AI, memory prices have surged significantly, spreading from the PC and smartphone industries into the automotive sector. Top executives from automakers—including Li Bin of NIO and Lei Jun of Xiaomi—have issued warnings that intelligent cockpits and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are becoming increasingly reliant on memory, driving up per-vehicle costs. Although memory accounts for a smaller share of total costs in vehicles compared to consumer electronics—and thus has limited impact on final retail prices—automakers are seeing their profit margins squeezed. Some may respond by raising prices, implementing subtle cost-cutting measures (such as reducing specifications), or accepting lower profits. Unlike the "chip shortage" crisis a few years ago, which caused production halts due to supply disruptions, the current challenge stems primarily from cost pressures and has not significantly affected production capacity or vehicle deliveries. Leading automakers, benefiting from stronger supply chain advantages, demonstrate greater resilience, while smaller players face heightened pressure. Industry insiders expect that as the memory market gradually returns to rationality, automakers will adapt through optimized technical and procurement strategies.
