Volkswagen is recalling more than 45,000 ID.4 electric SUVs in the United States due to a fire risk associated with their high-voltage batteries. To date, the company has received four reports of related fires. Owners of 1,299 higher-risk vehicles—produced between November 2022 and September 2024—are advised to park outdoors, limit charging to 80% capacity, and avoid using DC fast charging. Volkswagen will inspect and replace the affected battery modules at dealerships for these vehicles. The remaining 43,881 vehicles, while still permitted to use fast charging and be parked indoors, are also included in the recall due to the same battery defect. Although Volkswagen and its battery supplier, SK Battery America, have conducted extensive data analysis, the root cause of the issue remains undetermined. All recalled vehicles will receive a free battery health inspection and have software installed to monitor self-discharge as a preventive measure against fires.
