Tesla recently announced it has successfully mass-produced 4680 battery cells using dry electrode technology and has begun supplying battery packs for certain Model Y vehicles. The long-scrutinized 4680 program, previously criticized for slow progress, has now overcome critical manufacturing hurdles, with Tesla filing related patents to support the breakthrough. The batteries are fully manufactured—from dry electrode processing to anode and cathode production—at Tesla’s Austin factory, eliminating the need for drying ovens and solvent recovery systems. This significantly reduces production costs and increases energy density. With the Texas cathode materials production line and the Nevada lithium iron phosphate (LFP) line both expected to come online later this year, Tesla’s battery supply capacity will further expand. Mass production of the 4680 cells not only enhances cost efficiency for the Model Y but will also power future vehicles such as the Robotaxi and the lower-cost “Model 2,” helping optimize Tesla’s overall profitability structure.
