The incident occurred when the vehicle lost control while swerving to avoid a large truck that was illegally reversing, causing it to scrape its battery and catch fire. Although the vehicle unlocked automatically and the front-seat driver escaped successfully, the retractable door handles failed to deploy properly, forcing rear passengers to break the windows to escape. Dongfeng Yipai, the automaker involved, responded by stating that the incident had been properly resolved and urged the public to stop sharing related videos online. Currently, many new energy vehicle models—including the BYD e2, Dongfeng eπ007, and Tesla Model S/3—feature retractable or electronic interior door handles. These designs may hinder efficient evacuation during emergencies and often incur higher repair costs. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has recently opened a public consultation on proposed revisions to the "Safety Technical Requirements for Automotive Door Handles," aiming to standardize interior handle designs and enhance emergency egress safety. Industry experts are calling for automotive design innovations to prioritize user safety above all else.
