F1 Undergoes Major Overhaul for 2026: Audi and Cadillac Return, Hybrid Tech Takes Center Stage

Starting from the 2026 season, Formula 1 will introduce sweeping new technical regulations and an expanded team lineup. Automotive giants including Audi, Cadillac, Honda, and Ford have confirmed their entry or return to the sport, reshaping the competitive landscape. Under the new rules, power units will deliver equal output from internal combustion engines and electric motors—each contributing 50%—while significantly increasing electric motor power. The costly and complex MGU-H component will be eliminated, reducing development expenses and aligning F1 technology more closely with hybrid systems used in road cars. To control spending, F1 implemented a cost cap in 2021. Although the cap is nominally raised to $216 million in 2026, inflation adjustments and limited exemptions ensure that actual expenditures remain manageable. Additionally, under the ownership of Liberty Media, F1 has accelerated its commercialization efforts—expanding into the U.S. market, adding more Grand Prix events, partnering with Netflix on documentary series, and enhancing social media engagement to attract younger audiences and sponsors, thereby significantly boosting the sport’s global appeal.
