Volkswagen has decided to halt production of the current ID.4 electric SUV at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant in the U.S. to free up capacity for the all-new Atlas model launching in 2027. Production of the current ID.4 will continue until mid-April 2026, and the 2026 model year vehicles will remain available at dealerships through the end of the year. Although the current ID.4 has seen limited sales in the U.S.—with just over 22,000 units sold in 2025, a 31% year-over-year increase but far below the Atlas’s sales of more than 71,000 units during the same period—Volkswagen stated it still plans to introduce a new version of the ID.4 specifically for the North American market. The company did not disclose specific details but confirmed the new model will be built on an upgraded MEB+ platform, promising improvements in efficiency and performance. Earlier rumors suggested Volkswagen might drop the "ID.4" name in favor of "ID. Tiguan" for its next-generation electric SUV and shift its overall naming strategy toward more widely recognized model names. However, recent reports indicate the ID.4 name is likely to be retained. The new vehicle is expected to carry forward the current design language with only minor updates to align with the brand’s refreshed styling direction, while the interior is anticipated to feature more physical buttons and tactile controls.
