2026-05-04 21:45:08McLaren has developed an all-new MCL-HY race car for the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar class starting in 2027, alongside a track-only customer version—the MCL-HY GTR—exclusively tailored for high-net-worth clients and not road-legal. The MCL-HY GTR ditches the hybrid system found on the factory race car, instead using a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing approximately 720 horsepower. With the motor-generator unit removed, the car is expected to weigh under 1,000 kg—lighter than the WEC’s mandated minimum weight of 1,030 kg for competing Hypercars. Sharing its carbon-fiber monocoque chassis with the MCL-HY FIA Hypercar, the GTR was co-developed by McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive. The race-spec MCL-HY combines an internal combustion engine with a hybrid system, delivering a maximum output of 697 horsepower. Deliveries of the MCL-HY GTR are scheduled to begin by the end of 2025. Buyers will receive a two-year exclusive driving program featuring six international track events, supported by McLaren’s dedicated technical crew and professional driver coaching. Pricing has not yet been disclosed but is expected to be significantly higher than the McLaren W1’s starting price of $2.1 million.
