Geely Auto plans to launch its first internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle in the South African market and aims to expand its local lineup to around 10 models by the end of 2026. The company entered the South African market at the end of 2023, initially offering only two new energy vehicles: a fully electric model and a plug-in hybrid. Given that South Africa’s automotive market remains predominantly fueled by ICE vehicles, Geely has decided to adjust its strategy by introducing ICE models to broaden its customer base and enhance competitiveness against mainstream brands. Quentin Oppermann, Managing Director of Geely’s Galaxy brand in South Africa, stated that while the company’s overarching strategy remains focused on electrification, launching ICE vehicles is crucial for establishing a solid foothold in the local market. Currently, the adoption of new energy vehicles in South Africa is constrained by factors such as higher prices and insufficient charging infrastructure in rural areas. Despite these challenges, Geely’s electric models have gained popularity locally. For instance, the E2—launched in April 2024 as South Africa’s most affordable electric vehicle—sold out its initial batch within two weeks, and the second batch is already fully booked. Rising fuel prices and gradual improvements in charging infrastructure continue to drive growing consumer interest in new energy vehicles. To support its product expansion, Geely is accelerating its channel development. It currently operates 33 outlets across South Africa and plans to increase its dealer network to approximately 50 by the end of 2024, continuing to steadily expand its retail footprint.
