SAIC Motor announced it will deliver its one-billionth vehicle to a global customer by the end of this month, becoming the first automotive group in China’s history to surpass 100 million cumulative vehicles produced and sold. To celebrate this milestone, SAIC will launch a “Global Delivery Relay” event originating from Shanghai, China, and connecting multiple locations worldwide. The main venue will be the World Conference Hall at North Bund in Shanghai, with live broadcasts spanning multiple continents to simultaneously showcase delivery ceremonies across numerous Chinese cities and overseas countries. All brands under the SAIC umbrella will participate in the event. SAIC Motor’s origins trace back to the establishment of Shanghai Internal Combustion Engine Parts Manufacturing Company in 1955. In 1958, the company successfully prototyped its first Phoenix-branded sedan. In 1983, SAIC pioneered joint ventures in China’s auto industry by assembling the first domestically produced Santana. In 2015, it partnered with Alibaba to launch the world’s first internet-connected car, the Roewe RX5. On the international front, since exporting its first passenger vehicle in 2001, SAIC has expanded its products and services to over 170 countries and regions, delivering more than 7 million vehicles overseas cumulatively. Currently, SAIC operates over 100 overseas component manufacturing bases and more than 3,000 dealerships globally. It has established three major R&D innovation centers in locations including London and owns four整车 manufacturing plants in Thailand, Indonesia, India, and Pakistan. Additionally, SAIC has built China’s largest self-operated automotive logistics fleet. In 2025, SAIC unveiled its overseas “Glocal Strategy”—a combination of “global + local” approaches—planning to introduce an array of new models tailored for international markets, including SUVs, sedans, MPVs, and pickups. Vehicles equipped with its new HEV hybrid powertrain system will target mainstream segments worldwide.
