The United States, Mexico, and Canada are expected to fall short of completing the renewal process for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) by the critical July 1 deadline. The agreement, originally signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump during his first term, stipulates that if all three countries mutually agree by July 1, 2026, the pact’s term can be extended by 16 years through 2040. If the parties fail to reach a consensus on renewal by that date, the agreement will not immediately expire but will remain in force until 2036, after which it will enter an annual rolling review mechanism unless any party opts to withdraw entirely. This scenario could trigger prolonged negotiations and uncertainty among the three nations regarding rules and tariffs affecting industries such as automotive manufacturing.
