Tesla Rolls Out FSD V14 Lite to HW3 Owners, Narrowing Autopilot Gap Between Old and New Models

Tesla began rolling out the FSD V14 Lite update on June 29 to vehicles equipped with Hardware 3 (HW3). This update is a lightweight adaptation of the V14 driving behavior model originally developed for the HW4 platform, optimized specifically for HW3’s camera configuration and compute chip. It enables older-model vehicles to run the next-generation software architecture capable of handling diverse driving scenarios. This release brings core optimizations from the HW4 platform down to HW3, including reinforcement learning algorithms and offline prediction models. These enhancements significantly improve the vehicle’s predictive and emergency response capabilities in complex situations such as navigation-based lane changes, highway splits, pedestrian interactions, traffic light recognition, and handling cut-ins from adjacent vehicles. In terms of ride comfort, the system reduces unnecessary deceleration events, improves steering smoothness and lane-centering stability, and introduces new features like automatic parking, automatic departure from parking spaces, and enhanced reverse assistance. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Vice President of AI Software, stated that V14 Lite employs a compressed neural network but retains all functional modules, offering essentially the full feature set of the complete HW4-based V14 version. However, this remains an advanced driver-assistance system requiring continuous driver supervision. The initial rollout targets early internal beta testers, with broader deployment to approximately four million HW3-equipped vehicles expected over the coming weeks. This marks a major software upgrade for HW3 vehicles, which have remained on FSD version 12.6 since early 2025. During its Q1 earnings call on April 22, Tesla confirmed that HW3 lacks sufficient hardware performance to support unsupervised Full Self-Driving, primarily due to its memory bandwidth being only one-eighth that of the HW4 chip. HW3 was launched in April 2019 and was originally marketed as containing all the necessary hardware to achieve full self-driving capability. For HW3 owners seeking unsupervised autonomous driving, Tesla offers two paid options: (1) trade-in their current vehicle at a discounted rate toward a new car pre-equipped with HW4, with FSD entitlements transferable to the new vehicle; or (2) undergo a full hardware retrofit, including replacement of the compute chip, all cameras, and rewiring of the vehicle’s harnesses. This service will be performed exclusively at dedicated Tesla retrofit centers. Elon Musk emphasized that only vehicles upgraded to HW4 hardware will be eligible to join Tesla’s robotaxi fleet and unlock unsupervised autonomous driving functionality.
