Volkswagen ceased production of the ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant in April 2024, reallocating capacity to other models better aligned with current market demand. Existing ID.4 inventory is expected to meet U.S. market needs through 2027. Once this stock is depleted, its successor will be named the ID. Tiguan. Recently, spy photos emerged showing prototype ID. Tiguan vehicles undergoing testing in the Alps. Although heavily camouflaged, the prototypes reveal significant changes at the front: a fully closed grille aligning with the design language of the new ID. Polo and the mid-cycle updated ID.3 Neo; a redesigned bumper that channels airflow toward newly added air curtains on both sides; removal of the honeycomb mesh from the lower air intake in favor of horizontal trim elements; and a new sensor module integrated into the center of the front fascia. The side profile remains broadly similar to the current ID.4 but features substantial detail revisions: new doors with a straighter character line and conventional door handles replacing the previous flush-fitting design; simplified lower body cladding; and redesigned rear quarter windows and C-pillars. At the rear, the prototypes feature an entirely new tailgate, bumper, and diffuser. The taillights remain concealed under camouflage wrap, leaving their final design undisclosed for now. Inside, the cabin will receive a comprehensive overhaul, including a completely new dashboard, upgraded displays, redesigned control buttons, a fresh steering wheel design, and higher-quality interior materials. The ID. Tiguan will be built on Volkswagen’s next-generation MEB+ platform and offered with two battery options—58 kWh and 79 kWh—supporting a charging peak of approximately 183 kW. It will also feature upgraded electric motors to enhance both performance and efficiency. Earlier this year, Germany’s IG Metall labor union first revealed that the ID.4’s successor might be renamed the ID. Tiguan. This move aligns with Volkswagen’s recent branding strategy of gradually phasing out numeric nomenclature in favor of familiar, heritage-rich model names—such as naming the production version of the ID.2all as the ID. Polo and potentially calling the ID.Every1 concept the ID. Up in the future.
