Volkswagen is considering selling high-value brands such as Lamborghini and Ducati to fund the massive investments required for its transition to electric vehicles. Previously, Volkswagen sold a majority stake in its marine engine business, Everllence, at a valuation exceeding market expectations, though the proceeds are expected to be quickly channeled into group restructuring and development of next-generation models. The automaker currently plans to cut up to 100,000 jobs and shut down four factories—a move that would mark one of its largest restructurings in decades. Amid intensifying competition from Chinese automakers and the need for continuous heavy investment to remain competitive in the EV sector, several investment banks have advised Volkswagen to reassess its asset disposal strategy, including potentially spinning off Lamborghini through an independent IPO or selling Ducati. Lamborghini was acquired by Audi in 1998 for $110 million and generated $888 million in profit in 2023, with a current valuation exceeding $22 billion. Ducati, meanwhile, was purchased by Audi in 2012 for $909 million. Although some analysts argue that Volkswagen is unlikely to relinquish these consistently profitable brands, the ongoing discussions underscore the immense operational pressures the company currently faces. Volkswagen has not issued an official comment on these reports.
