In June 2025, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 30% of new passenger car sales in France, a 94% year-on-year increase compared to June 2024. The average CO₂ emissions of the new vehicle fleet that month dropped to 77.8 grams per kilometer, down from 96 g/km in June 2024 and 91.3 g/km in the same period of 2025. In the private retail market, BEV penetration was even higher, reaching 35%. For the first six months of 2025, the overall BEV market share in France stood at 28%. The best-selling BEV model in June was the Tesla Model Y, with 6,635 units sold, followed by the Renault 5 with 4,213 units. By powertrain type, gasoline-powered vehicles accounted for just 14.9% of sales, while diesel vehicles represented only 2.6% (a mere 1% in the private market). Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) held a 51% share, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 5.6%. Among PHEVs, the BYD Atto 2 recorded sales of 1,982 units, the Sealion 5 sold 740 units, and the Seal U sold 713 units. Chinese brands held an overall market share of approximately 7% in France, below the European average of 10%. Currently, 14 Chinese automotive brands operate in the French market. BYD sold 5,040 vehicles in June, a 399% year-on-year increase, making it the top-selling Chinese automaker in France; MG sold 4,688 units, up 95% year-on-year. In the same period, Germany’s BEV penetration rate in May stood at around 25%, similar to the UK’s level. The average BEV penetration across the EU, the UK, and EFTA countries in May was 23%. France’s rapid EV growth has been driven by government incentives offering up to €6,000 in purchase subsidies, low monthly-payment EV leasing programs, and automakers’ intensified rollout of electric models to comply with stricter CO₂ emission regulations set for 2025–2027.
