National Auto Standards Committee Proposes Regulating "Blue Lights" to Enhance Road Safety

The National Technical Committee on Automotive Standardization is currently undertaking relevant work to regulate the installation and use of vehicle lighting. Some vehicle models are equipped with a device commonly referred to as the "blue indicator light," which signals to other road users that the driver assistance system is active. However, misuse of this light has emerged, potentially posing safety risks. When activated at night, the blue light can cause glare, appear harsh to the eyes, and interfere with surrounding drivers' ability to assess road conditions. Additionally, vehicles fitted with this light are more likely to be targeted by other drivers attempting to cut in or tailgate closely, thereby increasing traffic risks. The current national standard GB 4785–2019, "Installation Requirements for External Lighting and Light-Signaling Devices on Motor Vehicles and Trailers," does not yet contain specific provisions regarding the "blue indicator light." Nevertheless, according to the principles of this standard, external lighting and light-signaling devices not defined in the standard should not be used. Under the guidance of relevant authorities, the National Technical Committee on Automotive Standardization is now advancing the revision of GB 4785 (Project No. 20262535-Q-339) and simultaneously strengthening access reviews and testing validation for "aggressive" innovative product designs. These efforts aim to further standardize the installation and use of vehicle lighting and enhance the safety performance of automotive products.
