The message claimed that the airbag inflators in certain vehicles had a Takata airbag defect, that fragments from the airbag when deployed posed a risk of injury, and mentioned that a centralized recall would begin at a specific time. It informed owners that their vehicles fell within the affected range, included an unfamiliar website link and QR code, directed owners to a page to complete verification and processing, and warned that failure to act would affect the vehicle warranty. BMW's official customer service confirmed that the widely circulated recall text message was not issued by the company and is a telecom fraud message. BMW has no centralized Takata airbag recall plan as mentioned in the message. Multiple authorized offline 4S dealerships have received risk warnings from headquarters and have been asked to handle owner inquiries. According to customer service staff, the senders obtained vehicle-related information through illegal channels and imitated the writing style of formal recall notices when composing the messages. Clicking the link in the message or scanning the attached QR code redirects to a phishing webpage. If users enter ID card numbers, bank card information, or verification codes on this page, their personal privacy will be leaked and their account funds will be at risk of unauthorized withdrawal. Some scams also induce users to enable screen sharing. BMW officially advises that automakers issuing genuine recall notices will not rely on ordinary mobile phone numbers to send text messages with unfamiliar links. To confirm whether their vehicle is involved in a recall, owners need to provide the 17-digit vehicle identification number for verification. They can call the BMW official customer service hotline, visit a nearby authorized dealer for an on-site inquiry, or log on to the official website of the national vehicle recall information system to check independently.
