Qian Huikang: GM prefers active transformation

The rainy days in Shanghai have lasted for nearly a whole month. Just like what is going on in the Chinese market right now, everyone is looking forward to the sunny days.

An interview with GM's global executive vice president and president of General Motors China, Qian Huikang, was also conducted in a rainy afternoon. The questions raised by the media were also related to GM’s global strategic transformation in China and the focus of Chinese business development.

Take precautions and get ahead of the industry

GM has proceeded the strategic transformation and structural adjustment at the global range. Many people think it as a “company crisis”. In fact, GM have been focusing on the improvement of profits and the active choices to provide guarantees for the long-term development of the group.

Qian Huikang said: “Our structural adjustment in North America have been carried out while the auto industry is going quite well. We are planning to deepen the development of our main business and also to strengthen our investment in future techs. We need to focus on the main business to ensure the good profitability and competitiveness, in order to achieve more in the future. “

In other words, do you prefer repairing the house on a rainy day or rather repairing it on a sunny day?

After the bankruptcy crisis of 2009, GM understands the importance of taking precautions: taking the lead in planning and making forward-looking plans could help GM getting ahead of the whole industry. Qian Huikang also stressed that the adjustment of the global strategy wouldn’t have any impact on the Chinese market, and more is to promote the development of the Chinese market and to accelerate the development of localized R&D and new innovative technologies.

Accelerate future innovations in technology

GM's vision for development is to achieve “zero accident, zero emission, zero traffic”. Qian Huikang believes that it is the best time to make breakthroughs on these three issues. As one of GM's most important markets in the world, China is also in the forefront of the world in the field of electrification. From the market to the policy, the entire industry will take another big step in the field of electrification. Qian Huikang said: "We will also fully promote the electrification of the Chinese market."

According to the plan, SAIC-GM will launch a total of 10 new energy vehicles in China by 2020, and in 2023, the total number of new energy vehicles in China will double to 20 models. At the same time, GM is currently developing a new generation of electric vehicle platforms, the Cadillac brand will be the first to launch the first pure electric model based on the platform. The future of the electric car lineup in China will cover all of its brands. Qian Huikang said that the scale effect of the Chinese market plays an important role in achieving the future of “zero emission”.

In terms of “zero accident” and “zero traffic”, GM has been actively developing and testing autonomous driving technology in San Francisco in the past few years. It is expected to be commercialized under the premise of safety concern this year. On the other hand, GM is also constantly developing intelligent driving systems. Last year, the local verification of Super Cruise's intelligent driving technology was completed, and it was officially introduced to the Chinese market according to the actual needs of the Chinese market. Qian Huikang mentioned that the fully automatic driving technology will also be applied in China. The specific launch time depends on the market acceptance and laws and regulations.

Dedicated to traditional business development

In the traditional business field, the Pan Asia Technology Center, established in 1997, provided strong technical support for GM's long-term development in China. Qian Huikang said: “The feedback of the demand of Chinese market collected by the Pan Asia team helps us more quickly achieve market trends and launch products that meet consumer needs."

The low tide of the development of the auto market also means that the Chinese auto market has entered the stage of high quality development. Qian Huikang is full of confidence in the long-term development of the Chinese market. He believes that market volatility is an inevitable stage in the development process and is not terrible. What we can do is to be fully prepared as soon as possible.

This year, GM will launch more than 20 new products to form a strong product structure. Among them, more than 10 models will land in the Chinese market for the first time, and some products will enter a new market segment. The first product of the new generation global car series will be launched in China in March. Qian Huikang added that electrification and intelligent networking are also the focus of this year's work, and we will speed up the layout in these two areas.

From a single brand, Cadillac will further expand its product spectrum, especially in the SUV market. In the next two years, Cadillac will maintain the rhythm of launching a new product every six months and continue to consolidate its growth momentum; SAIC-GM Wuling has created a new logo for the Baojun brand, focusing on creating a young, technological and intelligent brand image; Buick and Chevrolet are also constantly introducing products that meet the needs of consumers. Qian Huikang said: Our commitment to the Chinese market is long-term effective, and our investment is also long-term.

In the end: whether it is the structural adjustment of GM or the strategic layout for the Chinese market, all of these is to concentrate on the development of traditional business, as well as to invest in innovative automotive technologies that will change the future, including electrification and intelligence networking and so on. As Qian Huikang said, the change is the acceleration of the pace of revolution, and the commitment to quality and safety is a word for a lifetime.
