On January 8, Tesla's Gigafactory Shanghai reached a new milestone—the official rollout of its 5-millionth electric drive unit. This drive unit is Tesla’s self-developed "three-in-one" integrated system, combining the motor, gearbox, and inverter into a single compact unit. Known as the "heart" of an electric vehicle, it offers high energy efficiency, lightweight design, and a space-saving structure. Previously, the factory celebrated the production of its 4-millionth vehicle on December 8 last year and contributed to Tesla surpassing 9 million vehicles in cumulative global production by December 30. Notably, the number of drive units produced has exceeded total vehicle output by over 1 million units. Given the critical role of these components and their low inventory levels, this indicates that Gigafactory Shanghai not only supports local vehicle assembly but also exports drive units to Tesla’s other factories worldwide.
