CES 2026 Spotlights L4 Autonomy: NVIDIA Unveils Alpamayo Platform, Musk Responds Remotely

CES 2026 has become the new battleground for Level 4 autonomous driving technology. Breaking from its usual practice of unveiling GPUs, NVIDIA launched Alpamayo—an open-source AI platform tailored for L4 autonomy—dubbed by CEO Jensen Huang as a “thinking and reasoning” automotive AI, widely seen as a direct challenge to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Elon Musk promptly responded on social media, stressing the difficulty of solving long-tail scenarios. Beyond NVIDIA, Uber partnered with Lucid and Nuro to showcase autonomous robotaxis, targeting commercial deployment in California by 2026. Chinese automakers and tech firms—including Geely, Great Wall Motor, and Hesai—also unveiled a wave of new intelligent driving advancements at the event. Experts note that autonomous driving is transitioning from a phase of “technical validation” to one of “commercial validation,” with commercial vehicles—such as autonomous buses (RoboBuses) and delivery robots—leading the way in real-world deployment, while passenger vehicles still face hurdles related to cost, safety, and regulatory approval.
