A newly established junior research group at the University of Oldenburg in Germany is developing a technology to convert agricultural waste—such as hay, green waste, and algae—into fully biodegradable plastics. The plastic is based on polybutylene succinate (PBS), offering performance comparable to conventional polypropylene and polyethylene but with a significantly lower environmental impact. Led by chemist Dr. Melanie Walther, the project advances through three stages: optimizing microbial fermentation, improving separation processes, and enhancing energy recovery. The team has already filed a patent for a key chemical purification technique and plans to use bio-based PBS to manufacture medical products, automotive components, and packaging materials, thereby promoting the practical industrial application of renewable plastics.
