In 2025, India’s electric vehicle (EV) sales reached 2.3 million units, accounting for 8% of the country’s total new vehicle registrations. According to a report by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), electric two-wheelers led the market with 1.28 million units sold (57% of total EV sales), followed by 800,000 electric three-wheelers (35%), and 175,000 four-wheeled electric vehicles, among which light commercial models performed particularly well. Uttar Pradesh emerged as the largest market, with sales exceeding 400,000 units, while Delhi, Kerala, and other regions led in EV penetration rates. Policy incentives and festive-season consumer demand significantly boosted fourth-quarter sales. During the same period, India completed tenders for 10,900 electric buses, accelerating the electrification of public transportation. Although charging infrastructure remains a bottleneck, non-fiscal incentives, localized manufacturing, and grid decarbonization are supporting the country’s long-term transition toward electric mobility.
