In early 2026, XPeng Motors CEO He Xiaopeng declared the company had entered its "breakthrough year," announcing a dual-track strategy: stabilizing current sales with extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) while fully committing to AI-driven full self-driving technology. Despite delivering 429,000 vehicles last year—a 126% year-over-year increase, ranking second among China’s EV startups—the company faces mounting pressure from ongoing price wars and a weakening market. In response, XPeng has opted for a "two-pronged approach": on one front, launching multiple new EREV models like the P7+ and G7 targeting the sub-¥200,000 segment, with a maximum combined range of up to 1,704 kilometers; on the other, accelerating development of its self-developed second-generation VLA large AI model and Turing chip, aiming to conduct public road tests of L4-level Robotaxis within the year. He Xiaopeng believes software capabilities will surge from accounting for 10% to 50% of a vehicle’s total value, and that XPeng will skip L3 entirely to leap directly to L4 autonomy. However, due to limited user awareness and perceived value of advanced AI features, high-end intelligent driving functions are currently offered only on premium trims, while entry-level models prioritize cost efficiency. This year, XPeng plans to launch seven EREV models and four global SUVs, striving to strike a balance between immediate market survival and its long-term vision.
