The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government recently announced progress on autonomous vehicle testing. Trials are currently underway in multiple districts, including Kwun Tong and Kowloon City. The Transport Department has issued six pilot licenses covering 62 autonomous private cars and minibuses. The first licensed tech company has delivered impressive results, with its vehicles having safely traveled over 80,000 kilometers and commenced cross-district testing last month. During trials, the vehicles operated reliably in densely populated urban environments using advanced algorithms, smoothly executing standard driving maneuvers. At this stage, backup drivers are present onboard to take control only when necessary; fully driverless testing—supported by remote operators—is expected to gradually roll out later this year.
