Volvo has recalled its EX30 model in multiple countries—including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and South Africa—due to a thermal runaway risk associated with the 69 kWh battery packs supplied by Sunwoda. In the U.K., 10,440 vehicles are affected, and owners have been advised to limit charging to 70% to reduce risk. However, this measure significantly reduces driving range, sparking customer dissatisfaction. The recall follows an incident in Brazil where an EX30 caught fire spontaneously while in a dealership’s workshop, causing severe flames. South Africa has already issued an official recall order for 372 EX30 units. Volvo stated that such incidents are rare but emphasized that the recall is a precautionary safety measure. Separately, it has been disclosed that Sunwoda recently faced a claim exceeding RMB 2.3 billion from a Geely-affiliated company over defective battery cells.
