State Grid Corporation of China forecasts that electricity consumption for charging new energy vehicles (NEVs) during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday will hit a record high. According to data from its smart vehicle-to-grid platform, peak daily charging volume during the holiday is expected to exceed 34 million kilowatt-hours, up 17% year-on-year; meanwhile, peak daily charging on expressways will surpass 11 million kilowatt-hours, an increase of over 23% compared to the same period last year. Peak travel and charging demand will concentrate between February 14–15 and February 21–23. Charging volumes on expressways in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui provinces are projected to reach new highs, with the Changchun–Shenzhen Expressway (G25), Shenyang–Haikou Expressway (G15), and Shanghai–Kunming Expressway (G60) experiencing the heaviest charger usage. To manage this surge, State Grid has deployed 5,567 key service stations and will distribute over one million discount vouchers via its “e-Charging” app from February 12 to 23, encouraging drivers to use urban charging stations near expressway entrances and exits. By the end of 2025, China’s total number of charging facilities will exceed 20 million, supporting more than 40 million NEVs on the road.
