BMW Group has recently unveiled its sixth-generation eDrive electric drive system, which serves as the core powertrain solution for its upcoming Neue Klasse models. The system features a full-domain 800V high-voltage architecture and is equipped with 4695-format large cylindrical cells, delivering a 20% increase in battery energy density. Thanks to optimized system efficiency, the vehicle’s range is boosted by 30%. In terms of charging performance, the system supports peak charging power of up to 400 kW, enabling it to add 400 km of CLTC-rated range in just 10 minutes and complete a 10% to 80% state-of-charge in 21 minutes. The BMW iX3 50 xDrive model equipped with this system features a 108.7 kWh battery pack, achieving a WLTP-certified range of 805 km and exceeding 900 km under CLTC conditions. Official energy consumption is as low as 15.1 kWh/100 km, with real-world range performance demonstrating excellent accuracy. The drive system combines a front asynchronous motor (ASM) and a rear electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM), establishing a rare-earth-free drive architecture that eliminates reliance on permanent magnets. The motors utilize hairpin winding technology, achieving an impressive slot fill factor of 80% and reducing copper losses by 12%. A composite cooling system lowers the temperature rise rate by 30% under continuous high-load operation. Silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor inverters cut energy losses by 40%, while a highly integrated design reduces the weight of the electric drive unit by 10% and enhances reliability. The vehicle is also equipped with BMW’s Intelligent Energy Management system, enabling dynamic, vehicle-level energy management. This improves overall system efficiency by approximately 20%, reduces energy losses by 40%, and lowers costs by 20%. The system supports remote OTA updates and integrates intelligent safety electronic fuses to ensure safe operation of the high-voltage system. This electric drive platform offers exceptional scalability, supporting configurations ranging from single-motor rear-wheel drive to quad-motor all-wheel drive, with a maximum output of up to 1 MW (1,340 hp)—suitable for everything from daily commuting to high-performance M models. Additional features include Camp Mode and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. Coupled with an advanced thermal management system, the platform operates reliably across extreme ambient temperatures from -30°C to 55°C.
