The Chevrolet Sonic is officially making a comeback—but not for the U.S. market. General Motors Brazil has announced that the new Sonic will be launched exclusively in South America as a crossover, positioned as an SUV coupe featuring a sloping roofline. Its exterior design draws inspiration from the Equinox and Trax, slotting between the Onix Activ and Tracker in GM’s South American lineup. The vehicle is expected to be powered by a flexible-fuel mild-hybrid system already being gradually rolled out across South America. This system combines a 48-volt electrical architecture with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and is currently used in the Tracker and Montana models—suggesting the Sonic will likely adopt the same powertrain. Developed specifically for the South American market, the 2026 Chevrolet Sonic has no current plans for introduction in the United States.
