General Motors stated it has "not canceled any electric pickup truck programs." The GMC Hummer EV, which began production in late 2021, was the company's first vehicle built on its Ultium battery platform and represented a key step toward GM’s goal of transitioning entirely to electric vehicle sales by 2035. Since then, the Ultium platform has also been used to develop the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ. Recent reports claimed that GM had paused development of its next-generation electric pickup program and had informed suppliers to indefinitely delay related work without providing a timeline for resumption. However, GM subsequently denied these reports, clarifying that the projects have not been canceled. It has been disclosed that sales of several GM electric models have declined due to the expiration of federal EV tax credits. In the first quarter of 2025, sales of the electric Silverado, Escalade, and Hummer fell year-over-year by 41.0%, 26.8%, and 52.2%, respectively. Sales of the GMC Sierra EV rose slightly by 3.1%, with 1,288 units sold in Q1—up from 1,249 units in the same period of 2024—but still representing a small fraction of GM’s total quarterly sales of 626,429 vehicles.
