Uber is ramping up its involvement in charging infrastructure—not only utilizing existing charging stations but also planning to leverage its own data to determine the locations and operational models for new ones. The company is pushing globally to integrate autonomous vehicles onto its platform while simultaneously helping build fast-charging stations to support future autonomous ride-hailing fleets and the growing number of electric vehicle (EV) drivers on its network. Andrew Cornelia, Uber’s Global Head of Electrification and Sustainability, stated that the company’s vast trove of real-world mobility data enables it to pinpoint precisely where charging demand exists, thereby addressing the long-standing mismatch between charging supply and drivers’ actual needs. For ride-hail drivers, waiting in line to charge directly translates into lost income and high time costs. In February 2024, Uber announced a $100 million investment to build public fast-charging stations, partnering with charging network operators such as EVgo in the U.S. and IONITY in Europe to deploy stations in areas with high traffic and demand. Uber will also provide usage guarantees for these stations to mitigate the substantial upfront commercial risks associated with such investments. In New York City, despite a local policy introduced in 2023 encouraging taxi and ride-hail drivers to switch to EVs, supporting charging infrastructure has failed to keep pace. This has led to severe queuing issues in certain areas—even after new stations were added. To alleviate this problem, Uber has integrated a recommendation feature into its app that helps drivers locate nearby charging stations and displays estimated wait times. Cornelia emphasized that electrification, autonomy, and digitalization represent the future of mobility, yet public charging remains a critical bottleneck. Uber is therefore committing significant resources to address this challenge.
