The world's first LNG dual-fuel, 10,000-car-capacity Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) was officially delivered to South Korea’s HMM Company in Nansha, Guangzhou. Built by Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), and designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), the vessel measures 230 meters in length, 40 meters in breadth, and has a structural draft of 10.5 meters. It features 14 vehicle decks, four of which are hoistable, enabling it to carry up to 10,800 standard passenger cars—setting a new global record for car carrier capacity. The vessel is capable of transporting a wide range of vehicles, including electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen-powered cars, and heavy-duty trucks. To enhance safety in EV transportation, it is equipped with a zoned independent ventilation system, with each deck featuring dedicated fire suppression and ventilation units to mitigate the risk of lithium-ion battery fires. Powered by an LNG/fuel oil dual-fuel propulsion system, the ship is fitted with a MAN ME-GI main engine and achieves a service speed of approximately 19 knots. It enables low-carbon operations throughout its entire voyage, reducing carbon emissions by about 25% compared to conventional fuel-powered vessels, thus complying with the latest environmental regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Additionally, the vessel integrates a photovoltaic auxiliary power system, an intelligent ballast water management system, and a ship energy efficiency management system, supporting real-time monitoring and optimization of its operational performance. During construction, GSI employed digitalized and intelligent shipbuilding technologies to achieve precision control across all stages of the process, shortening the construction cycle by approximately 15%. This milestone signifies that China has now mastered core technologies for building 10,000-car-class PCTCs.
